The island of Hydra lies about 35 nautical miles from the main Greek port of Piraeus. Many things make the island unique in today's modern world. No wheeled vehicles of any sort are allowed - and that includes bicycles and skateboards.
Donkeys and ponies are the only form of transport, apart from four trucks used by the municipality for refuse and sewage removal. The byways are so narrow that pedestrians have to move into shop doorways to allow the vehicles to pass by. Locals are deft equestrians using impressive side saddle techniques. Very little rain falls on the island and fresh water in tankers has to be transported in every day by boat. Hydra is a charming rocky, mountain chain 20km long and varying between 1.5km and 6km wide.
